How Virginia calculates child support
Virginia starts with both parents’ adjusted gross monthly incomes and the statutory schedule. Insurance and reasonable work-related childcare enter the worksheet according to who incurs them.
Shared custody requires more than 90 statutory custody days for each parent. The worksheet applies the 1.4 multiplier, each other’s custody and expense amounts, income shares, and an offset. Separate child arrangements may require split or mixed worksheets.
Use DC-637, DC-638, or DC-640 for a filing. The shared PDF still prints 2021 poverty amounts; this estimate uses 2026 HHS figures.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official Virginia child support calculator?
No. This is an educational estimate using Virginia Code §20-108.2 and DC-637, DC-638, and DC-640. Use official forms for a court filing.
How are parenting days counted?
A day is a full 24-hour period. A shorter overnight for the parent with fewer overnights presumptively gives each parent half a day. Shared custody requires more than 90 statutory custody days for each parent; exactly 90 does not qualify.
What if different children have different schedules?
We calculate each child’s custody days, average days across shared children, and apply the statutory split or mixed formulas. Pure split custody uses separate family-unit schedule columns. Mixed cases apportion the all-children schedule before combining worksheets.
How does Virginia handle higher income?
Between schedule rows, the basic amount is interpolated. Above $42,500 combined monthly income, the statutory schedule amount is increased using 2.6%, 3.4%, 3.8%, 4.2%, 4.6%, or 5.0% of excess income for one through six children.
What assumptions and limitations apply?
The estimate uses monthly financial figures and worksheet amounts rounded to the nearest dollar. It supports ordinary sole, split, shared and mixed arrangements. Low-income shared cases, shared disability credits, mixed minimum-order cases, imputed income, disputed expenses, affordability findings, minimum-order exemptions, arrears, retroactive support, adult dependents and deviations require review. Unreimbursed healthcare and qualifying pregnancy / delivery costs are separate. Court orders control actual support.
How is shared support compared with sole support?
The shared worksheet uses 1.4 times basic support, custody shares and each other’s expenses, then offsets the obligations. If the sole result is lower in the same payer direction, it is shown as the lower comparison, which a party must affirmatively establish. If shared support reverses the payer, the statute treats shared support as the lesser amount.
