How Texas calculates child support

Texas generally applies a percentage to the paying parent’s monthly net resources under Texas Family Code Chapter 154. The standard percentages begin at 20% for one child and increase with the number of children in the case.

When monthly net resources are below $1,000, Texas uses lower percentages. When the paying parent must legally support children in another household, the multiple-family table adjusts the percentage. The current guideline cap is $11,700 in monthly net resources, effective September 1, 2025.

Childcare, possession time, the receiving parent’s resources, extraordinary expenses, and other circumstances may support a court deviation, but they are not automatic additions to this simplified percentage calculation.

Frequently asked questions

What assumptions and limitations apply?

CoBalance calculates monthly net resources using the Texas Attorney General’s 2026 employed or self-employed tax-chart method, then applies the low-income, standard, or multiple-family percentage. This simplified estimate supports one ordinary income source and monthly net resources of $11,700 or less.

It does not cover pass-through business income, complex tax adjustments, additional support above the cap, childcare or possession-time deviations, cash medical support, uninsured expenses, imputed income, or retroactive support.

Is this the official Texas child support calculator?

No. This is a free educational estimate based on Texas Family Code Chapter 154. Use the Texas Attorney General’s calculator for the official state tool.

What are monthly net resources?

Texas net resources include income identified by state law minus specific deductions. CoBalance calculates them from the income, pay frequency, employment type, insurance, union dues, and state income tax you enter using the Texas Attorney General’s 2026 tax-chart method.

Does Texas use both parents’ incomes?

The baseline percentage guidelines are applied to the paying parent’s net resources. A court can consider the receiving parent’s resources and other circumstances when deciding whether the guideline amount would be unjust or inappropriate.

Does parenting time automatically change the estimate?

No automatic parenting-time adjustment is included in the statutory percentage schedule. A court may consider possession and access when deciding whether to deviate from the guideline result.

How are health insurance and childcare handled?

Qualifying child health and dental premiums entered above are deducted when CoBalance calculates the paying parent’s net resources. Childcare can be considered by a court as a deviation factor but is not automatically added by this calculator.
