How New York calculates child support

New York’s Child Support Standards Act uses adjusted annual income, a child-count percentage, and each parent’s income share. This page computes income adjustments before applying the current $193,000 cap.

The 2026 poverty guideline is $15,960 and the self-support reserve is $21,546. The low-income test compares the paying parent’s income after basic support with those figures. Low-income add-ons are left for court review.

Use the official New York worksheet and FCA § 413 for a court filing and full rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official New York child support calculator?

No. This educational estimate uses CSSA and the current UD-8(3) worksheet. Use the official court forms for a filing.

How does New York calculate child support?

The calculator adds countable income, subtracts actual statutory deductions, applies the child-count percentage to combined income up to $193,000, and allocates the result by income shares. It then checks low-income protections and insurance / childcare adjustments.

What happens above the income cap?

The headline excludes support on income above $193,000. Courts consider statutory factors and/or percentages to determine additional support. The capped estimate is not a guaranteed total award.

What if parenting time is substantially equal?

The parent with the higher adjusted income is generally treated as noncustodial for support. Substantially equal time need not be an exact overnight tie. Equal adjusted incomes and disputed roles require individual review.

What assumptions and limitations apply?

All children have the same arrangement. Five or more children uses the 35% minimum. Income excludes no amount twice. Low-income add-ons, imputed income, public-program medical support, different child arrangements, arrears, retroactivity, and deviations require review. Unreimbursed healthcare is separately allocated; education is discretionary unless an existing order or agreement specifies a contribution.

Is my information private?

No account is required. Entries are sent securely for calculation, and CoBalance does not store your income, parenting-time, or expense details. Calculation amounts are not sent to analytics.
