How Alabama calculates child support

Alabama uses an Income Shares approach under Rule 32. Both parents’ adjusted gross monthly incomes identify a Basic Child-Support Obligation from the official schedule. Health insurance and allowable work-related childcare are added, divided by income share, and credited to the parent who pays them.

For a regular CS-42 calculation, Alabama also applies a $981 self-support reserve and a presumptive $50 minimum to the paying parent. When a court order provides approximately equal parenting time, the separate CS-42-S worksheet increases the basic amount by 50% and applies shared-care credits instead.

This free calculator follows those published worksheet methods for common situations. It is not a substitute for the official Alabama court worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official Alabama child support calculator?

No. This is a free educational estimate based on Alabama Rule 32 and the official CS-42 worksheet method. Use the official Alabama court worksheets for court forms.

How is Alabama child support calculated?

Alabama uses an Income Shares model. The Rule 32 schedule provides a starting amount, then the worksheet applies health insurance, allowable work-related childcare, payer credits, and the self-support reserve when applicable.

Is my information private?

No account is required. Your entries are sent securely to calculate the estimate, and CoBalance does not store the income or parenting-time details you enter.

How does approximately equal parenting time affect the estimate?

If a court order provides approximately equal parenting time, Alabama uses Form CS-42-S. That worksheet increases the basic support obligation by 50% before applying each parent’s income share, paid-expense credits, and the equal-care credit.

Do I need both parents’ incomes?

Yes. Alabama’s Income Shares guidelines start from both parents’ gross monthly incomes. If you are unsure of the other parent’s income, try a reasonable range and compare estimates.

How accurate is this Alabama child support estimate?

It follows the official CS-42 and CS-42-S worksheet formulas for the common inputs on this page. It does not include existing support or alimony deductions, split custody, extraordinary expenses, court deviations, or combined income above the published schedule. Treat it as a planning starting point.

Can I use this instead of talking to a lawyer?

No. This is a planning estimate, not legal advice or a court order. Use it to understand a possible outcome, then talk with your co-parent, mediator, attorney, or child-support agency. After support is set, the child support payment tracker can help keep due dates and payment history clear.

What if the children have different living arrangements?

Alabama may require a more detailed worksheet when children have different living arrangements. Use the official Alabama child-support forms.
